Must-Haves to Prepare for a Photoshoot

Photo and blog by Dhushyanth Karunakaran

One day, you wake up to a phone call and are asked to shoot for a last-minute wedding that will be hosted in just 3 days. You’re an amateur photographer and they want someone to photograph their special day. You say yes, but not sure what to do to prepare for the special day.

Working in the photography industry can be fun and exciting. It comes with lots of joyful moments not only for you, but for your clients to enjoy for the rest of their lives. In order to produce good work, you’ll need to prepare well for those events.

1. Organization is Key!

If you haven’t already, get a bag where you can organize all of your camera gear such as lenses, camera bodies, and all other necessities. If you’re wondering what kind of gear to get ready to go, I’d suggest a back-up battery, extra SD cards, and batteries for your flash if you have one on hand. Label the items if you have to. When you are on the shoot, you need to be as efficient as possible.

2. Test your Equipment in Advance

Make sure to have everything in working order! The last thing you want happening is an error code to pop on your screen restricting you from using it because the mirror in the camera body is not clean. Take a look to see if there is any microdust present by using a mini air compressor along with a microfiber cloth to clean it off.

3. Eat Well

As mentioned above, in terms of other necessities, think about yourself: what would you need in order to properly function on the shoot? Throw in some snacks and a water bottle to stay energized. Have a large meal before setting towards the big day. I can assure you that anyone after a meal is in a good mood!

4. Bring an Assistant

Having an assistant can be very beneficial to capturing the other precious moments that happen during the big moments at an event (reactions to the bride saying “I do!” would be a big one!). I personally like to make sure that I have a complete set of eyes on the couple, and my assistant on the guests and decorational elements at the venue.

5. Plan the Shoot Ahead of Time

There are two things I mean by this. Firstly: have a calendar you can hang up in your workspace. I personally like to use one where I can write and erase future events. I find this to be helpful since it is posted right across for me to glance at when I need. Secondly, if you know where the location of the event is going to happen, I suggest scouting the area to get a glimpse of specific areas to take the best photos. In doing this, it will also help you be more prepared when the time comes to take photos.

6. Live in the Moment & Have Fun!

I hope these tips can ease your mind a little bit. The best photos turn out well when the couples least expect it. Don’t sweat it and make sure to have a great time!
